I spent a good chunk of time today looking for small nativity sets. I thought that I would easily find some small inexpensive sets that children could play with. As my search wore on I became more and more disillusioned by the commercialness of Christmas. Not one store had any Nativity scenes in stock...not only were they not in stock, but most stores NEVER had any in stock. WHAT!?!? We have snowmen, reindeer, dogs in santa hats, but no Christ child? In my frustration, it hit me what this really meant. Each year we are losing a bit of truth and replacing it with what I call fluff.
I want to scream from the rooftops the true meaning of this season. I'm all about fun, but there is soooooo much more. How do I teach my children that it isn't about presents and parties, but about Jesus Christ? I hope that we all have a few moments of peace and reflection as we celebrate the most significant birth.

I'm with you on this. A few weeks ago Blelinda Craft taught a Relief Society class on keeping Christ in Christmas. She had all kinds of good ideas to teach kids to remember the reason for the season. I've got a few good family nights planned that are all about Christ's birth.
I love the Santa thing, but you're right. There is too much fluff at Christmas time.
I would try online for nativity sets. I bet you could find some good ones.
Yeah, I spent the better part of the day looking up stuff online about keeping Christ in Christmas. Found some good scriptures and stories and advents, etc. (I think it was the IDEADOOR.com.) Printed off a Nativity on cardstock that we colored, laminated, stuck magnets on the back and my kids have LOVED playing with it on the fridge. WE made a kid friendly nativity in our RS meeting (when you come for Christmas I have an extra one for you!) Deseret Book has TONS of Nativity sets also. Good luck!
amen sister!
I still can't believe it! Just blows my mind! I can feel your frustration and have the same gripe! Bring back the true meaning behind CHRISTmas...
I definitely feel the same way. There is so much "fluff" and difficult to teach kids the true meaning of Christmas and still enjoy the fun parts as well. There are some great ideas online, I actually found an advent last year that used the gospel art kit to share a story about Jesus and his life every day of December. We loved it! We have the Fisher price little people nativity. The kids love it!
Hey there, I know it is after the fact, but Fisher Price has a Little People Nativity and you can buy it on their website. For next year!
THat is so crazy and so sad you couldnt find a Nativity set! I personally havent looked for one yet, but when I do I will be prepared to be on the hunt to find one! Hope you are doing well!
